I am in a rental apartment in an old house from the 1940s. The TV is going up on a wall that seems to be made of approximately 12 mm thick raw pine, 60 mm wide, with a 3 mm masonite sheet on top. The studs that the pine is attached to are some thin material that I wouldn’t call studs. I have a stud finder, and where the studs are, there is a cavity behind; the studs might only be attached at the top and bottom, so to speak.

Question: Can I screw a 80 x 50 cm chipboard with a bunch of screws into the raw pine and then attach the TV mount to the chipboard? The TV mount has an arm, so the leverage is about 50 cm.

Of course, you can try.
But whether it holds is something we can't know, especially as we don't know how large and heavy your TV is or how sturdy the wall is.
Why not place the TV on a small cabinet?
You'll need somewhere to put DVDs, instruction manuals, and everything else anyway, right?
