I am in the process of renovating the kitchen in my apartment in a building from 1911. During the previous kitchen renovation (or possibly earlier, I'm not sure), the water and electricity lines were routed across the joists and floor to place the kitchen on the opposite wall.
When this was done, approximately 7.5x7.5 cm was cut into the joists to lay the drainage line there. Now, I've had a certified gas installer over because I want to install gas in the kitchen. He mentioned that it is possible to route the gas line in this space, but I would need to cut out an additional 5 cm in the joists next to the drainage line.
According to him, the strength/load-bearing capacity of the joists is not affected as long as you don't cut deeper than the 7.5 cm that was previously removed. Is this correct—and/or should I have someone check if those who cut for the drainage line even knew what they were doing and if the structural integrity is adequate after I've cut for the gas line?
