But they have a lot of holes around. Really handy sometimes, but not so great if you want them next to the bed or even as a coffee table. All small items will fall through.
I can think of a lot of smart solutions to fix this. Cutting a panel would be the nicest. But honestly, I am having surgery on the 23rd and not feeling well, so I need to make it as easy as possible.
Can you come up with something I can lay down, staple, glue on, and can cut to fit, or use an easy saw? Like a plastic placemat.

Fill in the holes? 
You might be able to buy acrylic sheets (Biltema has reasonably priced ones in various sizes) and saw them with a narrow saw, they are easy to handle and just need sanding smooth in the corners afterwards.
