Building an outdoor canopy will have an HEA beam over the opening and posts in HEA. Building them in so they are not visible, the question is whether they can be treated with something or not.
They will last an eternity untreated, but you could apply something if it's a good idea.
Sanding and painting is out of the question, so it would have to be some form of rust protection.
