We are going to install downlights in our existing pine staircase (open, of course). What's the best way to hide the cables?

Where should they sit and what should they illuminate?

They should be placed under the tread on every 3-4 steps and illuminate the step below.

What type of downlights? How does the staircase look? Do you have an L-profile on the steps or just straight steps?
If you have an L-profile somewhere, you can place the cable there and put a quarter round over it (possibly saw/sand/mill away a bit towards the cable to make room for it). If not, you might be able to add it to the front edge of the steps and possibly put a small saw cut underneath and place the cable there or do as if you had an L-profile from the start.

Upload a picture to make it easier to come up with suggestions.

We have an L-profile on the steps and that's not really where I have the problem. The problem I see is more about how to hide the cables when I go from one step to another, like in the side stringer. Should I rout them out, put pipes and paint, or is there another simpler way?
