Hello

I live in a 70s house and I want to replace my front door with side light.
The total opening is about 1500 mm and I would like to make the opening smaller to have a narrower side light!

Do you have tips on how to do it nicely?
It's a brick house and it will be difficult to find matching bricks if one would build it in that way 😅

You might be able to redo the door and opening with wood. With a little work, it could probably end up looking good.

If you can share a picture, we could help you better with suggestions.

Thanks, I'll upload pictures when I get home!

  • White door with adjacent window on red brick wall, exterior light fixture above. Broom and potted plants visible on snowy ground near doorway.
  • White front door with adjacent glass panel on a brick wall. A decorative ring with a candle hangs on the glass. Snow is visible on the ground.
I imagine that the best solution would be to remove the entire section with the door and window that is between the brick walls, and replace it with something equivalent that holds a smaller door.

It's possible to rebuild just the door frame, but it will probably be more work even if it seems like a smaller intervention.

Why do you want narrower sidelights?

Alternatives include having a wider door or double door. Or a narrow sidelight on each side of the door. Changing to another type of glass in the sidelight can also alter how it is perceived.

I think it's nicer with narrower sidelights.
