Hello!
I am moving to a townhouse where the stairs creaked and there was also some spilled paint. Otherwise, it is wood-colored but very worn.
Since we haven't moved yet and I didn't think to take pictures, I don't have an image right now of what it looks like. But I googled a bit and it reminds me of this one:

But it is a bit more worn in condition. And since I originally thought I would sand it and repaint it, why not spruce it up while I'm at it? I also thought about whether it is possible to fix the creaking. Is it possible to replace the "support boards" under each step with something slightly thicker? And since I thought of sanding it, it will become a bit "wood grain." Is there any oil or similar that I can apply first to make it a bit smoother or what you might call it?
I also wondered if there is any stylish way to install lighting in such a staircase? Just around the steps or something.

Often, if the stairs creak, it may be because the steps are glued in the stringers. New stairs that are screwed together become completely silent. I have read some thread suggesting you can drill small holes into the stringers and lubricate the steps, but I'm not sure if that works.
If your staircase is in varnished pine, I don't think you can oil it. We have renovated stairs at home by painting them white with regular lacquer and ordering new railings from a staircase supplier. They originally looked roughly like the picture you linked to. They became like brand new stairs after the renovation.
