Hello,
We are renovating a room where wallpaper has been applied directly onto particleboard. After doing some research, it seems advisable to put up drywall on the particleboard before wallpapering (or painting) to prevent cracking and similar issues. Many also recommend using regular drywall (12-13mm) instead of renovation drywall, as the latter is both more expensive and harder to screw/fit (?)
As both my partner and I are beginners at this, I thought I would ask a few questions and seek advice:
In some threads, it's mentioned that you don't necessarily have to screw into the studs, as the boards hold well enough even if they are only attached to the particleboard. But isn't there a risk of creating "craters" on the back of the particleboard (unless you pre-drill, which would mean a lot of pre-drilling) and a risk of puncturing the plastic behind it since the screws need to be the thickness of the drywall + 20mm? Isn't it simpler to ensure that you screw into the studs everywhere (and try to avoid the nails securing the particleboard)? I also assume you want to avoid joining the drywall at the same place where the particleboard is joined.
Other required things since the walls will become ~13mm thicker: spacer/extension rings of suitable thickness for electrical boxes, longer screws for mounting radiators and trim/moldings with rebates. Anything else to consider?
