I was planning to convert an old laundry room into a simple bathroom. The room is below ground level in a house that was drained and had a Platon mat installed about ten years ago. I will do most of the bathroom myself and will not apply any moisture barrier.
Previously, there was older waterproof wallpaper on the walls (thick foam type) that I am now trying to remove as best as I can. In the room, two walls are external walls, and it seems that half of the wall, the lower part, is cast concrete, while the upper half is plastered lightweight concrete. The lightweight concrete shows some cracks in places, and I'm worried that the tile grout will crack if I tile directly on it. What should I do? Remove the existing plaster and apply new, or can I install a waterproof board over the whole mess and tile that, or is there no risk of cracking? Strangely enough, in any case, the lightweight concrete part needs to be built out about five millimeters to be even with the concrete. Previously, there was a grooved molding over the joint between the wall parts.
