Hello!

Wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to tile over microcement? We are planning a house build and are considering using microcement in the bathroom. It's very trendy right now, but I wonder if one might get tired of it in the future. I've searched among the manufacturers but can't find any information about it.

Best regards!

Why build something now that you already know you don't want later, just because someone else thinks it's trendy? Sounds totally stupid.

Build it the way YOU want it from the start and don't see it as a fashion project.

Thank you! 😊

I think I was a bit unclear in my post, we want microcement and we'll probably choose it regardless. I'm just thinking that it might be an economic benefit not to have to redo the waterproofing when we eventually renovate the bathroom, even if it's far in the future!

Yes, I totally get you. But I think you're focusing on the wrong thing if you're already considering what comes next. When you have a house, there's so much you have to do. So, you want to minimize all that.

I believe that if you’re already thinking ahead, you won’t be satisfied now.

Of course, you can do as you wish, but try instead to think of the house lasting 200 years with minimal maintenance.

Regarding your question, I think it's possible, but I'll leave it to someone who really knows to answer.

Good luck with the build. You have a lot of excitement ahead but also a lot to consider. 👊🏻

The question might be whether it's possible to build a bathroom with microcement directly on top of a waterproofing membrane. Are there waterproofing manufacturers who approve of having their membrane covered with just microcement? Microcement became popular because you could apply it on top of tiles and easily achieve a different "look."

If you're not swimming in money, you can't remodel the bathroom every 5 years just because another style is trending.

It is likely that by the time renovation is due, one might start questioning whether the moisture barrier's technical lifespan is approaching.

One will probably decide to replace it when undertaking a bathroom renovation anyway.

It therefore becomes a non-issue.

Almost all waterproof membrane manufacturers approve it except Schönox, but that's only because the owner (Sika) has its own microcement which is, of course, approved.
