Planning to tile on a plastered stone wall (kitchen). The problem is that the wall is currently wallpapered, and removing the wallpaper is not the easiest task. I haven't tried steaming yet since I don't have a steam cleaner.

What to do?

Removing the wallpaper is difficult, and tiling over paper remnants is probably asking for trouble. Installing renovation plasterboard is also not easy as all screws need to be anchored.

I think I might have to screw and anchor, but before I start, do you have any other smarter solutions? And how closely do I need to anchor/screw the plasterboard? I'm considering skimping a bit and not anchoring as closely as it should be and instead complementing with construction adhesive between the plasterboard and the wallpaper. However, I don't like adhesive as it makes any future renovations more difficult. I try to use nails and screws as much as possible for the sake of future generations.

If anyone has a clever idea, it wouldn't be bad.

I would definitely start with a steam cleaner, rent or buy.

For the plaster, you can use nail plugs, which will probably make it easier.
But the best would probably be to remove the wallpaper. If it's regular wallpaper, a mixture of wallpaper paste and water usually loosens it if you brush it on and wait a while.

Suggestion 1:
Jula has an offer right now on wallpaper strippers (199 SEK): http://www.jula.se/tapetborttagare-med-anga-529003

Suggestion 2:
Renoveringsgips can be attached with some type of gypsum compound if you can trust that the wallpaper is firmly in place.

Thanks for three good answers. I will try to dissolve the glue and try to get it clean. I'll try adding some wallpaper paste to the water to see if it dissolves better, and the suggestion for Jula's cheap wallpaper steamer was good. I didn't even think about nail plugs, could be a last resort in combination with some gypsum plaster.

Thanks for your input, it's helpful when your own brain gets stuck in a rut and fixates on the same thoughts.
