It's not much more work to replace the wind boards.
Buy new ones that are long enough, measure and cut them. Oil/prime and give a first coat before mounting. Mount, do a final coat and screw on the sheet metal again.
And if you choose to repair, you still have to buy repair wood and paint if you don't already have it.
If you are going to replace the bargeboards, I think you should look at Karl Hedins bargeboards which are primed and mid-coated. Only a final coat on the outside is needed and then it's done.
