Hi,

Due to the upcoming extension, we will be using our basement entrance as a hall from November to July. It will likely get quite wet with shoes, clothes, etc., so I'm looking for a simple and cheap solution to protect the floor somewhat, but that doesn't look too boring. Any ideas?

  • Corner of a room with light wooden plank flooring and white walls, showing an empty space for potential hall use.
Plastic flooring, wet room mat. Just buy by the meter from a flooring company. And lay it on top of the existing floor.

The existing floor is nice, so most options will naturally feel dull. I imagine Masonite boards are obviously out of the question. A cheap laminate floor could work but takes time to install.
I would probably prioritize making it easy for myself while achieving the necessary functionality: I would remove the quarter-round molding, purchase needle-felt carpet/entrance mat by the meter, and then remount the quarter-round molding. A big advantage is that gravel and other debris get trapped in the mat.

But won't it get wet? I don't think that would be good for the floor?

The important thing is probably that the floor can breathe; if the room is kept dry otherwise, there shouldn't be any problems during such a short period. Even completely non-breathable materials damage floors by not allowing moisture to escape.
