What is the easiest way to remove material from a wall stud or sill? For example, to make a half lap corner or to recess a horizontal stud on its edge above, for example, a window.

The easiest way is probably to saw a number of grooves to the correct depth, but then what? Chisel?

If you have a circular saw or rip saw, set them to the measurement you want for the notch, e.g., 45 mm. Don't forget to account for the blade when setting the fence. Then draw a line on the flat side of the timber for the depth of the notch you want, e.g., 220 mm. Draw another line but now on the narrow side of the timber. Then saw off the piece with a handsaw or miter saw, and you have a notch.

Thank you for your response, but what is the smoothest way to remove from the middle of a beam and not the end?

Do you mean a notch in the middle of the beam but at the end? In that case, the principle with the circular saw and longitudinal cuts still works, then you drill a hole where you want the notch to end and cut this with a jigsaw. I hope I explained it so you understood :) Of course, you can also make the longitudinal cut with a jigsaw, but it should be good so it cuts straight, and use new, good blades for it.

Not quite sure if we mean the same thing, but the technique you described should work for my purpose, thanks.

The quick version is to make the two cuts with the handsaw and then just knock out the middle piece with a hammer; quick, easy but not very precise. However, this is for standing studs. If you want them for laying down, you either make a lot of cuts with a circular saw or miter saw just as Ola78 says, or if you have access to one, an overhead router is perfect for this. Preferably a powerful 2000W one that takes 12mm router bits.

if you have many reglar, you put them together with a clamp and then use a circular saw (correct depth) at regular intervals (about 5 mm), then you take a hammer and knock off the small flaps and after this, you bring out the chisel and even it out, with a sharp chisel you do it by hand...

edit: Helioz, why are you writing at the same time as me;)
