Hello,

I'm in the process of demolishing an arch at home and it occurred to me that it might be something that helps with load-bearing. It feels like it shouldn't be a problem, but what do you think?

That doesn't help with any load-bearing capacity. However, if you want to enlarge the opening, it could lead to load-bearing issues. But it's not certain since it depends on the surroundings, which your picture doesn't show.

I wouldn't think that the arch itself is built for structural reasons. Building an arch out of a door opening is a strange idea that emerged in the late 20th century, often combined with wallpaper with a coarse texture. I assume it came about when pizzerias arrived in Sweden, and everyone thought it was exotic.

However, the doorway might also have been widened in connection with the arch, so one should consider carefully when restoring it.

Edit: A little late on that one.

PS: Don't get me wrong - I love pizza (and pizzerias but not in the home) :-)

As pointed out in the above post, that arch construction does not provide much support.
