I would need to move the hatch that leads down to the crawl space, but typically there is a floor joist right there. It's hard to find another placement that doesn't become too unsightly.
Is there any instruction or anything to consider on how to frame such a floor joist?
I've never done anything like this before, but it usually works out as long as I get instructions.

Doesn't the same principle apply as when you shift off a rule or am I wrong, that is, cut the beam. Place a kottling? between the two nearest beams that you fasten the beam you've cut into. Completely wrong?
Sure, you can transfer the load of the cut joist to the two adjacent ones. However, you transfer more load onto the two adjacent ones, which can be unfavorable.
If you have the opportunity to insert two parallel joists on either side of the hatch/hole, which you attach the kottling to, you will have a more stable construction.
The parallel joists and the kottling should have the same dimension as the cut joist.
The kottling is attached to the cut joist using a joist hanger and anchor nails. The kottling is also attached to the two inserted joists using a joist hanger and anchor nails.
