I am going to lower the ceiling in the basement and was thinking of making a self-supporting ceiling with steel studs. That is, putting up tracks on the walls and then steel studs in these tracks.

The span won't be so large, about 2 meters (+- 1 dm) at the widest place.

For various reasons, I want to lower the ceiling as little as possible and therefore wonder if it's possible to use a 45 mm stud?:

Or do you have to use a 70 mm stud?

Does anyone have experience with Byggmax steel studs by the way? They are cheaper than, for example, Beijer, but how good are they? I assume the thickness of the material also matters, but I can't find info on this on their website.
 
There are descriptions from plasterboard manufacturers that describe ceilings framed with metal studs. I have only seen it fleetingly when I was searching for other information.

I think it was on Norgips' page that I saw it. As I recall, it requires considerably more than a 45mm metal stud.

If I interpret the table correctly, I can have a span of 3.3 m if I use 70 mm and 1 layer of gypsum.

But it doesn't say what the span would be if I use 45 mm. I have a span that's only about 2 m, and I plan to use one layer of gypsum.

My thought was that what I gain in span I can take advantage of with the dimensions of the stud? I.e., a smaller span should allow for a smaller stud?
 
Place perforated metal tape at several points between the stud and the basement ceiling, and then you can use a 45-degree stud. That way, you can have any span you want :)
 
Well, there might need to be some form of perforated strip... I had hoped to avoid drilling into the ceiling.
