Hello,

We are looking to remodel a room into an entrance hall. Today, there is a parquet floor on chipboard, beneath which there is 80mm of Styrofoam and Siporex beams. Below that, there is a partially heated basement. It was built as an extension in the 70s.

Now I want to convert it to have a tiled floor with waterborne underfloor heating. Can this be laid as a floating construction similar to today's floating floor? Or must we, for example, install joists instead?

There are thin underfloor heating cassettes available, but can these be laid floating?

The room is about 11 square meters.

Hello hempularen.

To achieve a really good tiled floor, I believe one should, if possible, opt to lay the tiles on a concrete structure.

With the information I've received from your post, I think the best solution in your case would be to lay slightly thinner insulation (50mm) and then cast an overlay concrete with crack reinforcement in it. This gives you the freedom to either embed water-based underfloor heating or lay an electric one on top of the concrete.

You can also choose to frame and lay floor gypsum as a base for the tiles. But this is a method I consider a last resort when dealing with wooden joists. You have a nice siporex frame that is well-suited for casting.
