Hello! We are going to build a porch for this villa - this year we plan to fix the "floor" and next year build the roof, columns, railing around, etc. We plan to build this in wood and have found good information about groundwork underneath (we plan to lay bearing gravel and then compress it with a plate compactor and then lay a layer of road gravel or setting gravel that is a few centimeters thick, compress it with a plate compactor, and then begin to place the joists.)
However, there are two big question marks that we are so grateful for help with.
1. As hopefully seen in the pictures, there is a rock surface in front of the house that unfortunately slopes directly towards the house. If we lay gravel as high up as the concrete goes and then fairly high wooden joists on that, all the wooden facade will have air against it and not gravel - is this enough as "moisture protection"? Is there anything else important to consider to prevent the facade from becoming moisture-damaged?
2. How do we best prep for the columns that will go in next summer? When we've seen other porches, a hole is cut in the wooden floor itself, and the columns are placed there, so it seems appropriate to prep for this. Is this prep enough, or should we cast something under the ground?
EXTREMELY grateful for your opinions and tips!!!
