Hello,

trying to understand how to measure to know what angle, number of steps, etc. I should have on my carriage pieces from a balcony. Is there any way to measure it out? For example, drop height?
Diagram showing a balcony with an arrow descending to the ground, labeled "How long and number of steps?" inquiring about stair measurement.

Stringer, not wagon piece.

That's all I had to contribute.

I apologize.

A step is about 16-19cm high. So first divide the height by that. This will give you the number of steps.

Then, a step should be between 25-34cm deep. Then take the number of steps you get above, and you'll get the length. I would advise you to take a plank and sketch everything out because it's easy to forget the overhang and the blind step ;)

Search for stair calculator and your worries will be solved.

I drew this staircase:
Outdoor staircase with wooden steps and metal railings leading to a patio area with chairs and table. Surrounded by trees and lawn.
It's very comfortable to walk on. I'll see if I can come up with the measurements.

Apologies.
Strange really that so many have difficulty with the correct term.
Even many of the building stores write it incorrectly.

Some simple rules...

The stair formula is
Step length + 2 x step height = sixty to sixty-three cm.
Example
Step height 15 gives length 30
Step height 16 step length 28
Step height 17 step length 26

Step heights from 13 to 17 cm are perceived as normal. It is possible to stretch the limit, but stairs with an incline greater than 45 degrees (height 20 length 20) are not considered professional.

All steps in the staircase should have the same height and length.

If you draw a few different options, you'll notice that adding one step increases the length of the staircase much more than you might expect. Besides, when an extra step is added, all steps become longer.

My personal preference for outdoor stairs is step height 15-16. Step length about 30. It might have something to do with the fact that I have a miter saw that handles 60 degrees...

Best regards, Findus

Addition:
Always make outdoor steps with wedges on top of the stringers. Inset steps are a pain to sweep clean of snow and leaves. DS

Vagn is a common everyday word, while vang is not, so it is quite reasonable for the average person to think it is called vagn-.

Yes, that might be the case, but it's a bit embarrassing that some building supply chains don't know the correct term.
edit: I have to take that back, it seems most building supply stores now know it's called vangstycke. A few years ago, though, many wrote vagnstycke....

Using incorrect search terms makes it impossible to Google good information. So it's justified to correct the spelling in this case.

Downspout is also heard quite often 😊
Personally, I prefer 63-65cm as a result on the stair formula. I do have size 45 after all...
