A bolt is an unthreaded cylindrical body used for joining, with or without a head. Unlike a rivet, the bolt does not undergo significant deformation during joining. The bolt is secured using friction and, in some cases, only tensile force. A variant of the bolt is the link bolt with a hole at the end that can be locked with a cotter pin or a hairpin cotter.
A bolt can indeed be threaded.

OT...SBH is right. There's a slight difference between what you call the thing in everyday language and the correct term. A bolt is just a cylindrical pin with or without a head and can also be equipped with holes for cotter pins to keep it in place... like a pin. Bolt is also the name for crossbow bolts I learned from my brother. I must also admit that I often use the name bolt where it should have been screw
