It's time to get started on the pier project now that it's winter. I've read up on all sorts of things regarding stone piers and have also read the forum threads about piers here. But there are still some things remaining for an overly curious person like me, hehe. This is how it looks today: I plan to remove about 2 meters of the current pier deck and replace it with a stone pier extending straight out. I also want to place logs along the right side of the boat in the picture, so the edge of the stone pier goes right into the fringe and becomes enclosed so I get a good docking spot.
There must be many here who have built stone piers and have pictures from the construction period showing how you tie them together, how you support a quay as I plan to do and attach it to the stone, etc.? Pictures would be greatly appreciated!
I plan to timber the structure, which is estimated to be 5x2 meters, with dovetail joints and also thread the standing corner logs into the timber. I feel pretty okay with how the structure should be built, but what I'm puzzled about is how best to construct the quay in the fringe. I was thinking of digging out, laying logs along the boat, and then logs across that go under the stone masses and are thus locked in place.
How do I get timber? Or logs? Can you buy them at a sawmill, or do you have to buy directly from someone with a forest? I have access to my own saw but no trees, so to speak
