I read and read here on the forum, but I'm not getting much wiser...

My partner and I are going to tear down a load-bearing wall between the living room and the kitchen. The problem is that the beam needed to support the ceiling will be 6.3 meters long.
We asked a supplier of glulam what dimension was needed and the answer was a 63 cm high beam. The alternative to reduce the height of the beam was to install a column, but we would prefer not to do that.

Now we're looking at a steel beam instead. There are tables where you can compare the dimensions of glulam with the steel beam, but is it really that simple?

Help!
