Hello

I have used the calculation below on glulam but want to reduce the height of the beam so I would like to use a steel beam instead. What is the equivalent dimension to 90x360 in a steel beam? It will be placed in the middle under the floor joists.
Is there any translation table? I have searched but haven't found anything

thanks so far

  • Chart showing dimensions and deflection for laminated timber beams, including a 90x360 beam. Headers include materials, dimension, deflection, and min length.
There is no straightforward answer. Several factors come into play, span width, heavy/light joist, support, fire protection, etc.

You can compare the flexural rigidity, which is the product of the modulus of elasticity and the moment of inertia.

To calculate the moment of inertia you need, you can set it up like this:

I_steel = (E_wood * I_wood) / E_steel
