Hello
I'm working on building a stable and have now come to the point of installing an intermediate floor for the hayloft. Initially, I had thought of a row of posts under the middle of the joist. Then I found two HEA120 beams lying on the farm that I now think might be used to support the loft floor to avoid the posts underneath. I know nothing about steel beams and how much load they can handle, so I thought someone here might be able to estimate whether my idea could work.
The conditions are as follows: The joist is 5.4m wide and 6.5m long (actually longer but will have a load-bearing wall a bit out towards one gable, so there will be no span issues there).
The hayloft should support the weight of about 3 tons of loose hay spread out over 46m2 of floor area, which gives about 65kg/m2

I have therefore thought of building the joist as follows: 45x220 beam cc60 5.4m long. Below, 2pcs 6.5m HEA120 beams with appropriate spacing between them for support. As flooring on the loft, it will be grooved 2-inch planks.

I understand if it doesn't meet the standards according to today's building codes for residential houses, but for a simple hayloft, I am curious if you think it will work.

The two HEA beams each need a post in the middle underneath them to be sufficient. The span is a bit too long.

Is it possible to calculate how much the deflection would be with the information I provided, or is there even a risk that it might collapse? A little flexing doesn't matter.

I got it to about 50 mm under my assumptions about load (low) and distance.

Yes, it might not be so successful. Then it will have to be posts anyway.

Let's say that the span of the steel beams is shortened to 5.5m (moving the load-bearing inner wall by 1 meter), how would that affect it? Marginally?

If you reduce the span to 5 m, it might work for the small loads you are considering.

Sounds promising. I probably have enough for 3 stålbalkar even, if it affects to any greater extent.

Three beams are obviously better than two. It makes it more pleasant to walk in the loft.
