Staircase of grating - how to make it "softer"?

Hello!

I have a small grated staircase.
It leads into our boiler room/mudroom, which then goes to the shower.
I thought our dogs would use this way when they are dirty..
But the poor things have trouble walking on the grates, and it also hurts
and they have sometimes gotten their claws/paw pads stuck... :eek:
Is there a way to cover or lay something on or in it so that bare feet and paws can walk comfortably?

I have the same construction on my porch and now I'm going to temporarily attach plywood or some other good material so that the dog doesn't get its claws stuck.

I should have screwed pressure-treated boards 22 ^95 from underneath through the grid.
Maybe I should have tarred them to avoid the green appearance of the pressure.

I think there is also 17X95, a bit too weak for a deck but there is plenty of support under here, so if you want to save some money and get a thinner look, maybe it could be something.
