I have a straight pine-style staircase from '75 that is finally going to be renovated. However, I have a question that I would like answered. On each step, there is a glued plastic (linoleum?) mat, and as a stair nose, there is an oak strip. The mat is well-attached, and I wonder if I can just glue the renovation steps directly over it?

If I need to remove the mat, I must sand down both the back and front edge list because the plastic mat is recessed into the step. What do you think?

## Edit: Removed the name of the supplier I'm buying the steps from...

I did that on a staircase in my previous house, it lasted for the years I lived there anyway. Lightly sanded and cleaned thoroughly.
