Hello!
I'm considering creating a multi-generational home by converting a stable into a residence if it's economically feasible. I would like to keep it as rustic as possible and would love to retain the walls as they are. How do you handle insulation in that case? Currently, there are thick plastered walls. I'm also wondering about the roof, which is of course wooden with beams. I'd like to keep that as it is as well, but since it's been a stable for many years, they're not exactly fresh. Do you sand down the entire ceiling, or how do you solve that? A third question concerns heating. The main house is heated with a wood boiler. Is it possible to connect the stable to that boiler as well? Is there anyone here who might have already done this? (The renovation)

Hello and welcome to the Byggahus forum!

There are many questions at once. You will get better answers if you can describe the current situation with a bit more precision. Generally, you will have to apply today's building codes for residential buildings since it is a barn you want to convert (unless it has a very valuable exterior). Nothing is impossible, but the question of how to do it depends a lot on how it's built.
Questions regarding heating systems and the like have their own subject headings on Byggahus. It is of course possible to connect the barn's heating to an existing boiler in another house. You would then need to run insulated pipes in a culvert. Then it's a matter of ensuring the boiler's capacity is sufficient. The best advice is to contact an architect. There are many questions that require a lot of insight.

Okay, yes, it was maybe a bit confusing. Eager to know if it's even worth it.
I'll just have a company come and take a look.
Thanks for the reply!
