We have a 1 1/2 story house built in 1990 where the interior walls mostly consist of drywall panels mounted on steel studs. On the upper floor, we have an issue where, when we move on the floor, there is a "noise" that sounds like a creaking/squeaking noise that arises along one wall. When we moved into the house, we installed parquet flooring (click-laminate) that probably shifts a bit when you walk on it. However, I checked to ensure there is enough space between the floor and walls all around. Nevertheless, we are getting a very annoying noise that seems to come from the steel framework behind. There's a "crawl space" along the wall where the noise arises, so I can actually access the steel framework from that side. It's hard to say if the noise was as bad before we installed the click-floor, as we installed it right away (before) we moved in, but it seems that when the click-floor "rocks" a bit when walking over it, we get a "squeaking" noise that seems to arise in the steel studs.
The wall with which we are having the problem runs parallel to the floorboards.
Can I secure the steel studs better, or is there another measure to improve the situation? In a desperate attempt, I tried putting back the wedges that tightened the floor when we laid it, and it got slightly better—probably because the floor was then pressing against the wall that pressed against the steel stud behind. But that's not a good solution because I can't have the floor under tension, as then the floor would buckle instead. ;-)
