Yes, if you place cans that keep away the insulation, it shouldn't be a major issue. Additionally, alucoated lamps are recommended. These lamps have a layer of alu paint(?) which allows more heat to radiate into the room instead of behind the lamp.

We bought 3-liter metal paint cans at the paint store.

First, check what kind of spots (downlights) you need. There are some differences in how they can be installed.

You should always have an air gap or air space above each spot if they are recessed; there are quite low surface-mounted ones that don't need an air gap.
Do as "Fasting" says, use jars or plastic boxes intended for this purpose; they are a bit lower but long and have an air space of about 5 liters. These are good because you still maintain good insulation above.
 
Buy regular metal buckets from your paint dealer, I did that and saved about 600 SEK compared to if I had gone to Bauhaus and bought buckets meant for spotlights. They are exactly the same except they don't have handles on them at Bauhaus.
