My wife wants a uniform wallpaper on the wall above the stairs. As it is now, the existing chipboard on the upper floor sticks out about 10mm from the vertical studs, making this impossible. The only solution, as it seems right now, is to install a trim or another list where the floors meet. The lower floor is a lightweight concrete vault.

I'm doing some renovations on the upper floor and have currently opened the backside of the mentioned wall towards the stairs. So it's relatively easy to knock out the chipboards (nailed into the studs) towards the stairs. But then the side of the studs facing the stairs must be cut/planed down by 1.3 cm (I was thinking of putting up drywall afterward) to align the wall with the lower floor. But what tool should be used for this? Electric planer? Reciprocating saw? It's not super easy to make it level. There are also quite a few studs to cleave.

  • Staircase with wooden steps and a wall with patterned wallpaper, showing an uneven surface requiring renovation to align with the lower floor.
  • View of an exposed wooden stud wall with visible insulation and gaps, part of a renovation project to align it with the floor.
  • Exposed wall insulation with wooden studs and particle board, part of a home renovation project near a staircase.
Maybe you can put an equally thick piece on the lower part of the wall.

Mja, it will be much more work since the lower wall is the middle wall of the house and runs the entire length of the house on the ground floor, including various door openings. It will be many boards to put up then.

Cutting straight and evenly on site is very difficult. I would have removed the studs and put new ones in the right place if it's important for the walls to align.

It's probably easier to have a list in the middle. That's usually how it's done.
