Simple question:
I have an old cottage with clay brick walls. The roof rests on the rafters at the top.
Now that I've torn everything down from the 70s, I see that the rafters have completely rotted away under one of the roof trusses (the far left in the picture). The rest of the rafters are slightly damaged but should manage.
Can I nail or glue a 45x120 beam along the entire rafter and past the rotted section and screw it on the other side where I find sound wood? I'd prefer to avoid tearing down too much and replacing it completely.
Or should I just splice in a new section? It feels like splicing might not be as stable, but maybe it's not that critical? An attached beam might not serve any purpose?
