Due to rot, I need to cut off a piece of the roof truss's upper arm and splice in a new one. The timber dimensions are 65x180, do I need 160mm nail plates or can I manage with 120mm? It's approximately one meter.
Difficult to give a good answer without knowing where on the truss's rafter the damage is located. It is difficult to get a moment-stiff joint with 160 mm splice plate.
Difficult to provide a good answer without knowing where on the rafter's high leg the damage is located. It's hard to achieve a rigid moment splice with a 160 mm splice plate.
It's located a couple of meters up on the high leg. However, it has a thick wall for support. Nearly a meter of that wall will also need to be replaced.
If the stud will be attached to the renovated wall, it doesn't really matter how you do it. After all, 120 mm splice plates are unnecessarily short. There won't be many screws on each side.
