Splice rafter rule

Need to splice a "rafters rule." Make a rule at the gables that I've framed up to roof height. Is it enough with 2 wall studs and then it extends to the end of the eave? Nail a board under the rafters rule for extra reinforcement and any splice on the outside?

Not the best sketch but the red piece is the one to be joined, when you have two attachment points that are nailed it should suffice, then a vertical stud will be at the bottom so it will resemble a truss.

I think he wants an extra takfotstass at the gable peak to, for example, attach fascia boards and cladding. It is common to insert a joist on its edge just as I interpret the red part on the sketch represents.
