We are in the process of designing our new two-story house and are considering whether to have a spiral staircase (as the architect suggests) or a U-shaped staircase. The main consideration is how it feels to walk on a spiral staircase and whether it feels comfortable/dangerous/steep, etc. Does anyone have experience and want to share? Ceiling height is 2.70 Thank you /Andreas

I have been thinking about a spiral staircase myself, but how is it to carry beds and sofas up and down in one of those? Worth checking out...'

I would bet on a U-staircase. You can't get large furniture either up or down in a spiral staircase, unless it is large in diameter.

We plan to take the furniture through a balcony on the upper floor, so that's really not a concern. I'm mostly wondering how the staircase "works" as a staircase, and not just as a stylish and smart solution.

As a staircase, it works, but it's not as space-saving as many think.

I can also add that the ambulance staff are not too fond of them.

Living in an apartment with a spiral staircase. Thought it looked nice and seemed smart at first. Now I hate it and am looking for a new apartment because of the staircase. So my tip is to skip the staircase.
