Sparse to standing panel shed (air gap)

I am in the process of merging a "friggebod" and I became a bit concerned about the term "gles". Is it correct that you first nail horizontal "gles" and then vertical to create an air gap? If yes, is this overkill for an insulated "friggebod" or is that how it is done?

It is always recommended to have a standing air gap behind the panel for proper ventilation of the panel.

I'm in the process of assembling a small shed and got a bit puzzled about the battens. Is it that you first nail horizontal battens and then vertical ones to create an air gap? If so, is this overkill for an insulated small shed or is this how it's done?

What kind of paneling will you use? What type of paint do you plan to use for the paneling?
