Hello!

I am in the process of insulating my double garage and took the opportunity to remove the wall that divided the garage.

Now to my question, I would like to remove the 70x70 beam in the middle that supports the roof truss to create more space in the garage, the two beams closest to each wall will be retained and covered with gypsum, the span between the remaining beams closest to the middle would then be 4 meters, the roof truss consists of a 115x40 & 140x40, can I safely remove the post in the middle without risking significantly weakening the roof? The roof area is 48 m2.

Wooden garage ceiling structure with beams and insulation visible. Central supporting post discussed for removal to increase garage space.

Thanks in advance

It is a homemade truss construction. I would prefer to see the entire roof truss before making a statement, but based on what I can see, I don't think you can remove the stplpen.

Yes, you have really used what you had when you put together the truss, I gratefully accept suggestions on how I can reinforce it, for cosmetic reasons since it is so visible I'm considering covering it with either plaster or tongue-and-groove boards.

It feels a bit tedious if one would have to tear everything down and put up a solid beam to get rid of the post.

I will upload some more pictures tomorrow.

But when you have everything so open, I think the fastest/simplest might be to just put up a glulam beam and find a good way to distribute the load down into the slab.
