Soundproof with double plasterboard or thicker insulation?
Planning to build an interior wall in an apartment where the wall should be thin, and aiming for the best soundproofing for the best price
What do you think dampens better, using a 45-stud and an extra layer of drywall or thicker insulation?
a) Drywall, OSB, 70-stud and insulation, OSB, Drywall
b) Drywall, Drywall, OSB, 45-stud and insulation, OSB, Drywall (results in a thinner wall)
(Want the OSB at the back to attach things)
(Will seal even the underlying panels and outer edges with no general gaps)
Option b should result in more mass and thus dampen more?

Now the wall is in place and very soundproof, you can't hear conversations through it unless you shout for something to be heard. There are 3 layers of gypsum on one side and 2 on the other with 45 framing. I did various tests holding up gypsum and tapping on it before I made my decision. Very satisfied with the wall. Maybe I would have even taken 4 layers on one side and 1 on the other if I were to do it again. There's also an OSB on each side.
