Hi there.
I'm considering building a simple type of outdoor room on the plot measuring 6x2.5m. At the "front," there won't be any wall, so it will be completely open, and I would prefer not to have any posts in the middle there either.

Is it okay to have a 6-meter wooden beam with support at the outer ends, and how strong does it need to be? I'd like to avoid an expensive laminated beam because the construction should be as simple as possible.
The roof will probably consist of corrugated metal, so no heavy tiles.

  • Open-sided garden room plan, 6 meters wide, supported by beams on each end, without central posts. Roof likely to be corrugated metal.
Hello,
Here http://www.martinsons.se/default.asp?id=21404 is a free design program for glulam with stock dimensions.

If you want the beam in wood, it won't work with anything other than glulam / kerto / other lightweight beam with your span, standard dimension k-virke is too weak.

Ah, great. Thanks for that!

Best regards
/Johan
