We need more rooms at home and are planning to build a larger family room. The idea is to extend about 4.5m out from the existing house structure with a sloped roof, 14-degree pitch (there's no room for a truss-like construction and I don't want a shoebox design). Shingles will be laid on this. The question is how this should be constructed. Is 45x220 rafters enough, or do we need to go for sturdier materials (glulam) to ensure it holds? Living in Småland (snow zone 2).

I guess 220 studs will suffice. Consider it an indication of what can probably be done. Then you must bring in an engineer to calculate it. The attachment to the house should also be examined, as it's not certain the wall can handle the extra load. It's possible that it can even be made a bit lighter.
