I can use glue. But would you have fastened it with nails, tacks, screws?

Well, I was thinking about that too. Worked quite a bit to remove the ugly rubber mat that was glued on.
Wanted to be sparing with the glue, mostly just to ensure that it holds like a frame around the edges and doesn't gap in the middle.
Speaking of rubber mats... When do you benefit from having it on a workbench?
I was considering letting one part of the bench have a rubber mat, but it's expensive, so if there aren't any direct advantages to it, it would be better to have a loose piece and use it as needed, like a cutting board in the kitchen.
