I cut a particle board with an oak veneer (cover board for kitchen frames) in my table saw, and it chipped the veneer.

Should I try using the more finely toothed plunge saw instead?
- Maybe complement with tape where the cut will be?

Or is hand sawing with a Japanese saw or something preferable?

If you have splinter guard on the track for the plunge saw, there are no problems.

Is the rubber strip a splinter guard? Or do today's plunge saws have something new?
(I have a Makita, maybe SP6000JXX or at least something similar)

I should add that I need chip-free on both sides.

Tape for safety's sake and use the plunge saw

It can help to run just 1mm deep on the first pass. And fasten the board to another board, that will support the veneer and then you won't get splinters on the underside.

Tape can work, but I often find it doesn't hold well enough.
