Next week I will start building a staircase down to the lower level. Since it is an L-shaped staircase, the stringer will have a curve at the bottom to make it look nice where the stairs turn. I plan to cut out the stringer with a jigsaw, but it will likely leave saw marks. Can I use a belt sander to sand the curve, or do these only work on flat surfaces? It's an underlying stringer, so only one side is cut with the jigsaw and needs to be sanded.

Anyone here with experience using a belt sander?

No problem for the bandsander. Start with a coarse paper and finish by hand.

Rough cut first with, for example, a jigsaw

Is it a concave or convex surface?
The tip is probably to never stop with the grinder but always go back and forth.

Concave, so I need a belt sander where the guard in front is set high. I haven't found any sander where the guard is set high at the back, probably because it would impair dust collection.

Jigsaw and pendulum saw are probably the same thing.
In the Gothenburg area, it may be called a stickesåg.

There are really sharp thick jigsaw blades without set.
Draw thin and saw slowly and hold steadily.
That way there will be minimal sanding.
