I am in the process of replacing the floor in a room with wainscoting on the walls. The paneling has been on top of the baseboard which is now removed, so I need to even out the wall under the paneling to attach the new baseboard that doesn't have the same dimensions. We're also replacing the moldings at the same time, and the dimensions don't match there either, so this must be resolved somehow.
It occurred to me that it might be more worthwhile to tear down the old wainscoting and put up new with the correct dimensions against the floor and that works with the new moldings. At the same time, I have an idea that I can place the paneling with a spacer against the wall to be able to address the quirky electrical wiring in the old 40s apartment and get more outlets in the room. I'm thinking that I could run the cable hidden behind the paneling.
Does anyone have experience with similar projects or arguments for or against such a solution? I expect that the paneling would be about 30 mm from the original wall in that case. Could it look odd? And what do you do with the moldings around windows and doors? Any tips and advice are welcome.
Put a high and sturdy baseboard instead. Possibly buy a high-planed board and rent a hand router to achieve a nice profile. Under the existing trim, you put a trim base (google it). Paint everything on site, and it will look good.
