Currently renovating a laundry room that is slightly lower than the rest of the house. Tore down a chipboard on the interior wall which is on the exterior wall. Found this stud that is directly attached to the wall. Looks a bit moldy but is dry.

What should I do? Tear it down and put up a new one? Shouldn't there be something between the wall and the stud to protect against moisture from the concrete?

  • Wooden stud on concrete wall with possible mold, surrounded by insulation and pipes, in a partially renovated laundry room.
Add some syllpapp behind as a barrier.

One should avoid insulating on the inside and having organic material against a cold exterior wall.

The best option would be to plaster or tile instead. Next best is to use steel studs and ensure there is an air gap and that air can circulate behind between the framed wall and the basement wall.

Regardless, you should tear out the mold-damaged material and discard the insulation.
