I am interested in purchasing a vacation home where part of the timber facade is damaged by rot. The picture shows one of the worst attacks and there are a total of 5-10 similar damages in corners and joints. The cause of the damage is, as I understand it, that the facade was repainted with plastic paint over 10 years ago.

My considerations for solving the damage
  • Have a company scrape off all the paint
  • Scrape/chop/saw away all rotten timber
  • Patch and repair to make it reasonably sealed
  • Cover the timber facade with a wind barrier, air gap, and panel
Is there a risk that the damage under the paint is so severe that the house must be demolished? I don't have much experience with timber houses, so I welcome all thoughts, ideas, and tips.

  • Image of a corner log joint on a wooden house, showing significant rot damage under peeling white paint, with exposed wood.
The wood has been rained on, causing it to absorb moisture and not dry out properly. It's probably not too much of a concern for holding up, just remove what is rotten, then put battens and wind barrier with new paneling on the outside. Possibly cut away the corners, leaving about 5 cm. It's important that the bottom ones are okay. You can do this yourself without paying anyone for it.
