Hello,
I have a support column in the carport (bearing) that has suffered rot damage. The column supports a laminated beam. I've scraped off the paint and damaged wood and now hope to dry it out and save the column.

What is the best thing for me to do now?
Primer oil and paint (and possibly solve the aesthetic with sealant)?
Or can chemical wood be used to fill in cavities?

Thanks in advance for tips and advice!

  • Damaged wooden carport pillar with rot; paint scraped off, exposing bare wood beneath, next to a laminated beam. Background shows a parking lot.
  • A wooden carport pillar with visible wear and weathering damage, adjacent to a ladder and horizontal wood slats; concerns about repair methods are discussed.
Solving the problem of why it has become rotten. Personally, I would have then replaced it.

Got a tip to use Tec7 sealant for the aesthetics/filling holes and unevenness. Does anyone have experience with Tec7? Should I apply it on oiled and painted surfaces in that case?

Isn't it easier to just replace it? Under with a jack and it goes quickly.

The problem is that water seeps into the end of the pole via the glulam beam.

Hello

Lift with a jack.
Replace the post.
Separate between the glulam beam and the post with tar paper.
Find the cause of the leak and fix it.
Don't make up any quick fixes with sealant putty or chewing gum, but do a proper job right away.

Good luck.
