We are planning to build a custom house in a modern/box style, but not fully box-like as we want some recesses, etc. The roof construction is proposed to be 2 degrees, but my carpenter says that normal trusses are usually made down to 5 degrees. This, however, greatly worsens the appearance of the house. Can anyone say roughly how much the difference is between glulam beams versus "normal trusses," as I am not getting a good answer from the carpenter.. Thanks!

There is indeed a trick to use. The sloping roof is surrounded by "walls" that give a visual impression of a complete box. Here you see the backside of origo from götenehus, here an opening is obviously necessary so that the roof water can drain out. Possibly a slit could be made instead, so it looks more like a box here as well...

You should ponder a bit and perhaps discuss and refine the ideas with your architect.
