We have a garage that partially lacks a ceiling. Half of the ceiling is covered with particleboard (probably called something else, it's large wood chips that are compacted), and half is just beams under the outer roof. The walls are covered with the same boards as those in half of the ceiling. Now we are going to cover the entire ceiling and from what I understand, drywall is most suitable for a garage. I wonder if we should take down the existing ceiling and walls and replace them with drywall, or can we put drywall over the existing boards?

Sounds like OSB boards. Put OSB on the rest of the ceiling and then start screwing up drywall.

OSB under drywall is an excellent substrate because you can safely mount things anywhere.

Let the sheets stay in place and then screw up the plasterboards.
