My dear mother has an old concrete staircase leading to the house door, with one step that is completely loose. She is now wondering if it can be repaired in an easy way, or if she needs to hire craftsmen to fix it, or even cast a completely new one? She also noted that there was a small gap between the staircase and the house, which I think is normal and might even be a good thing?

Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Gap between a green door and a worn concrete step with a doormat, bucket of purple flowers, and walking sticks visible on the side.
  • A cracked concrete step with a gap, garden tools, a watering can, and a flower pot nearby.
Is it a loose piece or has a tile come off?

If it's a loose piece, lift it away, clean, then use some mortar to "glue" it back on.

The entire bottom step is completely loose.

If the entire step block is detached from the rest, perhaps the easiest is to cast a new one.
